Download: Photoshop Brushes Series 42 20 brushes for creating mist effects and abstract backgrounds By Dave Nagel We arrive this week at our forty-second collection of brushes for Adobe Photoshop. This time around, we present 20 brushes designed to help you create mist and other vapor effects (such as clouds, fog, smoke, etc.).

The brushes
There are 20 brushes in this newest collection, all designed to emulate fog, mist, smoke and cloud effects. Some of the brushes create light, subtle mist effects, while others are less subtle, creating wispy tendrils of vapor for dramatic backgrounds or large, abstract patterns.

All of the brushes in this collection are fully dynamic for use with Wacom tablets. The principal dynamics used are shape and scattering, as well as color and opacity for dynamically brushing on subtle variations on each paint stroke.

The brushes in this collection are also quite enormous, so they're good for covering a lot of canvas real estate in a short time. Sizes range from 444 pixels (diameter) on the small end and 1,000 pixels on the large end, with most in the neighborhood of 700 or 800 pixels.

With such large brushes, it's difficult to show much of the detail these brushes create while still showing them at their actual size. in our normal previews. So I've enlarged them a bit to help give you a better idea of what's going on. In the images below, most of the effects were created with just a few light swipes of the Wacom pen, while others combine multiple colors and blending modes to create more dramatic effects.

Here's a sampling of 13 of the brushes available in this collection. Download and installation instructions follow below.

Download and installation
As usual, this week's collection of brushes are available free of charge for use in both commercial and non-commercial projects. But I am interested in how these brushes are being used, so please drop me a line at dnagel@digitalmedianet.com with any information you can provide on how you're using them and where I might see examples. These brushes support Photoshop CS and CS2, though it should be noted that Photoshop CS2's paint engine has become extremely unstable when running under Mac OS X 10.4, so Photoshop CS is recommended until either Adobe or Apple can come up with a solution for this lingering problem. These brushes are also supported in recent releases of Adobe Photoshop Elements. The brushes run on Mac and WIndows systems, including Intel-based Mac systems running Photoshop under Rosetta.

To download the brushes (NagelSeries42), follow the download link below.

Download: Nagel Series 42 (2.8 MB zip archive)

Once you download the file (NagelSeries42.zip), decompress it. It will then be called NagelSeries42.abr. Place the decompressed file into your Photoshop brushes directory, either at /Applications/Adobe Photoshop/Presets/Brushes/ or /Applications/Adobe Photoshop/Presets/Brushes/Adobe Photoshop Only/.

Once you do that, launch Photoshop, and open up the Brushes palette. Click on the flyaway menu on the top right of the palette, and you should see this brush collection listed in alphabetical order. Select it, and the brushes will be added to your presets.

You can also load brushes manually by clicking on the flyaway menu in the Brushes palette and choosing "Load Brushes" from the list of available options.

Now you're ready to paint. Have fun!
